On August 7th, the DGP Gravity Project, an initiative by D-Robotics (地瓜机器人), hosted its first closed-door demo day in Shanghai. The event brought together robotics startups that are redefining recreational activities—from golf practice to hiking and personal mobility. With over 40 investment firms in attendance, the focus was on how these innovations can enhance leisure and outdoor experiences.
A Gathering of Young Innovators
The ten teams presenting were selected from over 200 member companies and public applications. The founders were remarkably young, with an average age under 30. Among them were a 2004-born serial entrepreneur in open-source humanoid robots, a college undergraduate who secured a Pre-A round, a former Huawei 'Genius Youth,' and researchers from top labs at Penn, Shanghai Jiao Tong, and City University of Hong Kong. Their projects spanned a wide range of recreational applications, signaling a shift from industrial robotics to lifestyle-oriented solutions.
Spotlight on Winning Teams
Three teams stood out. Euler Vientiane (欧拉万象) won the Pioneer Gravity Award for their work on home-embedded embodied intelligence, aiming to bring smart assistance into daily life. Xunling Technology (巡领科技) took home the Gravity Exploration Award for BirdieSense, an AI-powered golf training device that uses 3D posture recognition to help golfers improve their swing. Tiaoyue Technology (眺月科技) received the Gravity New Star Award for their jumping robot, a novel form factor that could be used for outdoor exploration and entertainment. Both Euler Vientiane and Tiaoyue Technology received seven 'light-ups' from investors during the voting session, tying for the most popular projects of the day.
Investors Look Beyond the Hype
While the technology was impressive, investors were more interested in practical questions: Who would buy these products? Why would they pay? Are the price points viable? What can the first batch of users validate? Many observers noted that AI capabilities alone don't create a reason to buy. Early-stage teams need to prove their products can move beyond early adopters like geeks and developers to reach a broader market. This focus on commercialization was a key theme throughout the demo day.
From Golf to Hiking: Recreational Applications
The projects showcased the breadth of recreational robotics. Xunling Technology's BirdieSense, for example, mounts on a golf club and uses AI to provide real-time swing analysis, making professional-level coaching accessible to amateurs. Wudai Power (无待动力) is developing exoskeletons for hikers, offering assistance on steep trails and reducing fatigue. Langji Intelligent (朗极智能) focuses on next-generation personal mobility devices, while Lingji Island (灵迹岛) embeds AI chips into traditional cultural accessories, blending heritage with modern tech. These products illustrate how robotics can enhance outdoor activities and leisure pursuits.
Building an Ecosystem for Recreation Tech
The DGP Gravity Project is more than just a demo day. It's an ecosystem designed to support robotics startups at every stage. D-Robotics provides the underlying hardware and software platforms, including their RDK X5 Module, which powers devices like BirdieSense. The program also connects startups with supply chain partners, investors, and media outlets. Since its inception, DGP has supported over 500 robotics startups and helped incubate more than 100 innovative products. The ecosystem includes 40+ incubators, university labs, and investment firms, creating a robust network for young entrepreneurs.
Early Success Stories
Some teams have already achieved significant milestones. Langji Intelligent, founded by a 'post-00s' entrepreneur, completed product development, launched a global crowdfunding campaign, and secured a Pre-A round within two years. Luobo Party (萝博派对), led by a 2004-born founder, is building an open-source humanoid robot platform aimed at makers and universities worldwide. Xunling Technology's BirdieSense is set to launch on global crowdfunding platforms soon. These successes demonstrate the potential of combining young talent with the right resources.
The Future of Recreational Robotics
As the demo day concluded, it was clear that the boundary of robotics is expanding from factories to everyday life. The recreational sector offers a fertile ground for innovation, with applications in sports, fitness, outdoor adventures, and cultural experiences. With the support of initiatives like DGP, these young teams are poised to transform how we play and explore. The event ended with networking sessions where startups and investors discussed product positioning, supply chains, and market expansion, setting the stage for the next wave of recreational robotics.
